The Board of Studies (BoS) is the fundamental academic body in an autonomous college, responsible for framing, reviewing, and updating the syllabi and academic programs for a specific discipline or group of subjects. It is established under the guidelines of the University Grants Commission (UGC) and operates under the broader academic oversight of the college's Academic Council.

Composition of the Board of Studies

The BoS is composed of both internal and external members to ensure academic quality and industry relevance. As outlined by the UGC:

Chairman

The Head of the Department (HoD) concerned.

Internal faculty

All teachers within that specific specialization or department.

External subject experts

Two subject experts from outside the parent university, nominated by the college's Academic Council. One subject expert nominated by the Vice-Chancellor of the affiliating university from a panel of recommendations by the college principal.

Industry representation

One expert from the corporate sector, industry, or an allied field relevant to placements.

Meritorious alumnus

One postgraduate alumnus of the college, nominated by the principal.

Co-opted members (optional)

The BoS Chairman may, with the principal's approval, co-opt additional experts when formulating special courses.

Functions of the Board of Studies

Curriculum review and updatePeriodically reviewing and updating the syllabus to keep it relevant and current with the latest advancements in the field.

Course developmentIntroducing new courses, redesigning existing ones, and developing innovative teaching methodologies and learning materials.
4.
Evaluation techniquesRecommending methods for evaluating student performance, including determining details of continuous assessment.
5.
Examiner recommendationsSuggesting a panel of names to the Academic Council for the appointment of examiners for the semester-end examinations.
6.
Coordination of activitiesCoordinating various departmental academic activities, including research and extension work.
7.
Advisory roleAdvising the college's Academic Council on matters related to its specific subjects.

Operating Procedures

Meeting Frequency

The BoS must meet at least twice a year to discuss and approve its recommendations before they are presented to the Academic Council for final approval.

Member Term

The term for nominated members on the BoS is typically two or three years.
